Branding: A Day in the Life

  • What sites and/or applications do you visit most often? Describe the sites and applications that you identify.
    The digital media site I use all day, every day, is YouTube. I pay for the ad free version of YouTube and it is the way I consume most digital content (an excessive amount). I very occasionally visit Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, and I rarely visit Twitter (X).
  • Do you have positive or negative reactions when using certain types of digital media?
    I have a negative reaction to using Facebook and Instagram in my personal life. My experience is that posts on social media aren’t a true representation of life experiences. Another reason I limit my use is because of the numerous studies that show the potential dangers of too much social media use and it’s possible impact on mental health – “increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts.” (Robinson, 2023)
  • Do you find that your needs are satisfied using one type of digital media over another?
    Yes, my needs are satisfied by watching YouTube content, but not when using social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
  • Do you receive emails from companies? If so, what types of email catch your attention? What do you look for?
    I receive so many emails from companies. Emails with offers for items that I am interested in do catch my attention. Because I work in advertising and create/send customer emails I probably look at emails with a more critical eye. I look for strong copy, strong photography, good call to action, and responsiveness. I also almost exclusively view emails on my mobile device so responsiveness is very important to me. I look for other details too like an updated copyright date in the footer and whether the email contains links to other helpful site areas and a clear method to unsubscribe. The frequency of emails is also important to me. There should be a delicate balance of sending just enough communication without being too annoying. I am quick to unsubscribe if I feel I am getting too many emails too frequently from a company.
  • What do you notice about the use of digital media in marketing today? Explain.
    The biggest thing I notice about digital media in marketing today is that companies are doing an increasingly better job of integrating digital campaigns across all digital marketing channels.
